How many sons of Noah are named in the Noah's Ark story?

The story behind the answer

Three sons of Noah are named in the Noah's Ark story: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis introduces these three men before describing the building of the ark and the Flood. They enter the ark with Noah, their father, and their wives. Their names are given together in Genesis 5:32 and repeated in the Flood account, making three the direct count of Noah’s named sons.

After the Flood, the narrative describes events involving Noah and his sons, including the episode concerning Ham and Noah’s drunkenness. Genesis then presents Shem, Ham, and Japheth as ancestors of nations and peoples. Later biblical genealogies develop their family lines in different ways.

The text does not name Noah’s wife or the wives of his sons in Genesis. Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions give some of these women names, but those names are not part of the Genesis account itself. Another common confusion is counting Noah’s daughters or additional children; Genesis names only these three sons in the ark narrative.
