How many sons of Noah are named in Genesis’s Ark narrative?

The story behind the answer

Genesis names three sons of Noah in the Ark narrative: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Genesis 6:10 identifies these three sons before describing the flood, and Genesis 7:13 includes them among those who enter the ark with Noah.

Each son is also described as having a wife, so the flood account identifies Noah’s household as Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the three sons’ wives. Genesis does not name any of the four women in this passage. This is why popular retellings can provide a total household number while still having only three named sons.

The three names recur in later genealogical material. Genesis 10 presents nations and peoples as descending from Shem, Ham, and Japheth, making the family list important beyond the ark episode. The text does not say that Noah had additional sons who survived the flood; the named survivors in his immediate family are these three.
