Metallica’s The Black Album has 12 songs on its original studio release. The standard sequence begins with “Enter Sandman” and ends with “The Struggle Within.”
The track list balances concise, riff-driven songs with longer compositions and the band’s first widely known power ballad, “Nothing Else Matters.” Other prominent tracks include “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Of Wolf and Man.”
The original album is distinct from later deluxe editions and box sets. The expanded 2021 reissue added demos, rough mixes, live recordings, and other archival material, so counting every song across those editions produces a much larger total.
Another source of confusion is the use of “The Black Album” as a nickname rather than the official title. The album is formally called Metallica, and the 12-song count refers to its original 1991 studio configuration, not to every later bonus track.
