The songs move between radio-famous anthems and darker album cuts. “Sad but True,” “Holier Than Thou,” “The Unforgiven,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Nothing Else Matters” are among the best-known tracks, while “Through the Never,” “Of Wolf and Man,” and “My Friend of Misery” complete the album's broad stylistic range.
The original vinyl sequence divided the 12 tracks across four sides, with three songs on each side. That format differs from the uninterrupted listening experience many people know from the compact disc and digital editions.
The album also generated five commercial singles: “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” “Don't Tread on Me” received rock-radio exposure but was not released as a commercial single. The 12-song count applies to the original standard album, not later deluxe editions containing demos, live performances, and alternate material.
