How many songs are on Metallica’s standard 1991 album, The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Metallica’s standard 1991 album, The Black Album, contains 12 songs.

The sequence begins with “Enter Sandman” and ends with “The Struggle Within.” Between them are well-known tracks such as “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “My Friend of Misery.”

The standard track count can be confused with some expanded editions. The Japanese edition added “So What,” a cover of a song by the Anti-Nowhere League, as a bonus track, making that edition longer than the regular release.

On the original vinyl configuration, tracks 1–3 occupied side A, tracks 4–6 side B, tracks 7–9 side C, and tracks 10–12 side D. The standard album therefore has 12 main tracks regardless of format.
