Five singles were released to promote Metallica's 1991 album Metallica.
The commercial singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they kept the album visible across radio, television, and music-video outlets for an unusually long promotional cycle.
The songs showed the album's range. “Enter Sandman” provided the immediate opening hit, “The Unforgiven” introduced a dramatic power-ballad approach, and “Nothing Else Matters” became one of Metallica's best-known songs beyond the metal audience. “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad but True” reinforced the record's heavier side.
“Don't Tread on Me” is the common source of a counting mistake. It was sent to rock radio but did not receive a commercial single release. Therefore, counting it produces six promotional tracks, while the official commercial-single total remains five.
