Five singles were released to promote Metallica, also known as The Black Album.
The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they presented different sides of the album, from its radio-ready opening track to its ballads and heavy groove-based songs.
“Don’t Tread on Me” was also sent to rock radio, but it did not receive a commercial single release. That distinction is why it is not counted among the album’s five official promotional singles.
The campaign helped turn Metallica into a major mainstream success. Several of the singles remain staples of the band’s live performances and are among its best-known recordings.
