That duration covers the 12 songs issued on Metallica’s original 1991 studio album. It includes the compact “Enter Sandman,” the extended “My Friend of Misery,” the ballad “Nothing Else Matters,” and the closing track “The Struggle Within.”
The running time is easy to confuse with the length of later anniversary editions. The 2021 remastered box set added demos, rough mixes, live recordings, and other material, so those editions run far longer than the original album.
The album’s substantial length reflects the band’s move toward carefully developed arrangements and a broad sonic palette. Although many songs are structured for immediate impact, the complete record also includes slower passages and instrumental detail that reward listening from beginning to end.
