Five official promotional singles were released from Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album.
The five singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” They were issued across 1991 and 1992, helping the album remain visible on radio, television, and music charts long after its initial release.
“Enter Sandman” was the lead single, while “The Unforgiven” followed as the second. “Nothing Else Matters” demonstrated the band's ability to succeed with a reflective, largely balladic song, and the later singles reinforced the record's range.
“Don't Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio promotionally, but it did not receive a commercial single release, so it is not counted among the album's five official singles. All five commercial singles charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
