Metallica released five singles to promote The Black Album.
The five singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they gave the album an unusually long promotional life and presented several different sides of the band's songwriting.
“Enter Sandman” arrived first in July 1991, while “The Unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters” followed as major singles. “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad but True” extended the campaign into the album's continuing commercial success. The songs also helped demonstrate that Metallica could move between driving metal, power-ballad writing, and slower groove-based material.
“Don't Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio after the album's release, but it did not receive a commercial single release. That is why the standard account identifies five official promotional singles rather than six.
