Metallica's Wherever We May Roam Tour played 250 shows in support of The Black Album.
The tour began on August 1, 1991, shortly before the album's release, and continued through May 8, 1993. It covered arenas and stadiums across North America, Europe, Mexico, Asia, Australasia, and South America.
The touring cycle also included the 1991 European Monsters of Rock dates and was followed by the Guns N' Roses/Metallica Stadium Tour. The scale of the schedule reflected the album's rapid rise from a major metal release to a global blockbuster.
One memorable stop was the September 28, 1991, concert at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. The free show was described as the first free outdoor Western rock concert in Soviet history, with crowd estimates ranging from 150,000 to 500,000. The tour was later documented in the film A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica.
