Metallica's “The Unforgiven” spawned two sequels: “The Unforgiven II” and “The Unforgiven III.”
“The Unforgiven” appeared on Metallica, commonly called The Black Album, and was released as the album's second single in 1991. The song explores an individual's struggle against forces that try to control or subjugate him.
“The Unforgiven II” appeared on Reload in 1997, while “The Unforgiven III” appeared on Death Magnetic in 2008. The numbered titles connect the songs thematically, though they are separate recordings rather than parts of one continuous album track.
The original song also became a recurring live piece. It was performed during the Wherever We May Roam and Nowhere Else to Roam tours and returned to regular performances after an 11-year absence.
