Three promoted clubs were included in the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend: Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City.
Coventry City opened away to defending champions Arsenal on Friday. Hull City hosted Manchester United in Saturday’s lunchtime match, while Ipswich Town hosted Sunderland later that afternoon. All three promoted clubs therefore appeared in the first Matchweek.
The three clubs replaced the relegated teams from the previous Premier League season. Coventry returned to the top flight after 25 years away, Ipswich after one year, and Hull City after nine years.
The number is easy to misremember because the opening schedule also featured Leeds United, another club returning to the Premier League, but Leeds were not one of the three clubs promoted for this season. They were already part of the top-flight group entering the campaign.
