The round involved all 20 clubs in the division, with each team playing once. Arsenal versus Coventry City opened the season on Friday 21 August 2026, and Fulham versus Chelsea concluded the round on Monday 24 August.
The ten matches were distributed across four days. There was one Friday fixture, five on Saturday, three on Sunday and one on Monday. This staggered arrangement accommodated television coverage and Brighton’s European qualification commitments.
The opening round included nine matches with a winner and one draw: Newcastle United and Liverpool finished 2–2. In total, 29 goals were scored across the ten fixtures, including Brighton’s 4–0 win over Aston Villa and Chelsea’s 3–2 victory at Fulham.
