Ten Premier League fixtures were played across the 2026–27 opening match round.
The opening round contained the standard 20-team league format, with each club playing once. Arsenal versus Coventry City opened the season on Friday 21 August 2026, while Fulham versus Chelsea completed the round on Monday 24 August.
Saturday featured five matches: Hull City versus Manchester United, Ipswich Town versus Sunderland, Nottingham Forest versus Leeds United, Everton versus Crystal Palace, and Brentford versus Tottenham Hotspur. Sunday then brought Manchester City versus Bournemouth, Brighton versus Aston Villa, and Newcastle United versus Liverpool.
The staggered schedule was designed around broadcast selections and Brighton’s participation in UEFA Conference League qualifying. Although supporters often call the collection an “opening weekend,” the final fixture was played on Monday, making the complete first match round span four calendar days.
