Twenty Premier League clubs were scheduled to play in the 2026–27 opening round.
The Premier League contains 20 teams, so a complete Matchweek consists of 10 matches. The 2026–27 opening round was spread across four days, from Friday 21 August through Monday 24 August, and included all 20 clubs once.
The schedule had one match on Friday, five on Saturday, three on Sunday and one on Monday. That distribution produced the 10 fixtures required for a full round without any postponed opening-weekend match.
The 20-club structure has been a defining feature of the Premier League since the competition expanded to that size for the 1995–96 season. Each club normally plays 38 league matches in a season: 19 at home and 19 away.
