Seven Premier League clubs had new managers on the 2026–27 opening weekend.
The unusually high number was one of the defining storylines attached to the first Match Round. Several prominent clubs changed managers during the summer, creating a season with many new tactical approaches and unfamiliar dugout pairings.
Among the notable changes were Xabi Alonso beginning at Chelsea, Marco Rose taking charge of Bournemouth and Matthias Jaissle becoming Newcastle United’s head coach. Roberto De Zerbi also led Tottenham in the opening fixture after arriving in the previous season’s closing stages.
The figure refers to clubs beginning the campaign with a new manager, not the total number of coaching changes made across the entire season. That distinction matters because managers can change after the opening weekend.
