Eight people were aboard Noah’s Ark in the Genesis account.
The group consisted of Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three wives of those sons. Genesis 7:13 describes this family entering the ark before the Flood, while later biblical passages also refer to Noah as one of eight people preserved through the waters.
The number counts humans, not animals. Genesis gives separate instructions about bringing animals aboard, including distinctions between clean and unclean animals. Those animal instructions are why the human total should not be confused with the total number of living creatures on the vessel.
Genesis does not name Noah’s wife or the wives of his sons. Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions supply additional names, but those traditional names are not part of the biblical account itself. The explicit biblical count remains eight people.
