How many people from Noah's family were aboard the ark in the biblical Flood story?

The story behind the answer

Eight people from Noah's family were aboard the ark in the biblical Flood story.

The eight are Noah, his wife, Noah's three sons, and the three wives of those sons. Genesis names the sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth. First Peter 3:20 also refers to eight people being saved through water.

The biblical account does not give the names of Noah's wife or his daughters-in-law. It does, however, clearly establish the family group that entered the ark. Their survival is presented as the continuation of humanity after the Flood.

The number is sometimes confused with the number of animals, since the story discusses both family members and creatures in close succession. Eight is the human total in the biblical account. It is not the number of Noah's children, nor the number of people who later populated the entire world in the narrative.
