How many people from Noah’s family survived aboard the Ark?

The story behind the answer

Eight people from Noah’s family survived aboard the Ark.

The New Testament’s First Epistle of Peter describes eight people as being saved through the flood. This total corresponds to the family members listed in Genesis: Noah, Noah’s wife, their three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three wives of those sons.

Genesis names the sons but does not give the names of Noah’s wife or the daughters-in-law. Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions supply various names, but those traditions are not uniform. The number eight is therefore more secure than any proposed set of personal names.

The number should not be confused with the animal counts in the narrative. Genesis contains different instructions concerning clean and unclean animals, while the human survivor group is consistently understood as Noah’s household. The concise biblical family total is eight.
