How many people from Noah's family entered Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

Eight people from Noah's family entered Noah's Ark. Genesis identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the three wives of those sons as the human occupants preserved through the flood.

The three sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Their wives are not individually named in Genesis, and Noah's wife is likewise unnamed in the biblical flood account. Counting these people gives one man, one woman, three sons, and three daughters-in-law: eight in total.

The number is also stated in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 3:20 refers to eight people being brought safely through water. Later traditions supply names for some unnamed family members, but those names are not part of the Genesis account and do not change the total.
