Eight people from Noah’s family are said to have entered the Ark.
Genesis 7:13 identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three wives of those sons. Together, these make eight human occupants. The same total is echoed in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being saved through water.
The number eight counts people, not the animals or the total population of the ark. It also does not mean Noah had eight sons or eight wives; the passage names one wife for Noah and one wife for each of his three sons.
Some later traditions add names or stories about the family, but the Genesis account itself supplies only the family relationships, not the personal names of the four women. The eight-person figure is therefore a concise biblical total based on the named household structure.
