How many people entered Noah's Ark, according to 1 Peter?

The story behind the answer

According to 1 Peter, eight people were saved through Noah’s Ark.

First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being brought safely through water. In the Genesis account, those eight are Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three sons’ wives.

This total is a New Testament reference to the Genesis story, not a number stated in the same form in the ark’s construction instructions. Genesis 7:13 names Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives as entering the ark.

The figure is sometimes confused with the number of animals aboard the ark. Biblical passages give different animal instructions, including pairs and, in one passage, additional animals described as clean. The number eight specifically counts human occupants.
