The First Letter of Peter says that eight people were saved through the flood.
First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being brought safely through water. This number corresponds to Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the three sons’ wives. Genesis describes those family members entering the ark, while the New Testament passage makes the total explicit.
The number is different from the count of animals aboard the ark. The question concerns human survivors, not pairs or groups of animals. It is also distinct from later interpretations that estimate the ark’s total living population by combining people and animals.
The passage uses Noah’s flood as part of a discussion of salvation and baptism. Its wording is a New Testament reference to the Genesis account, so readers should not mistake it for a separate flood narrative with a different family list.
