How many people does Genesis name as surviving the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark?
Answer
Eight people
Answer
Eight people
Genesis describes eight people surviving the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark.
The group consists of Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the wives of those three sons. Genesis 7:13 presents them entering the Ark together. The number eight is also stated explicitly in 1 Peter 3:20, which refers to “eight souls” being saved through water.
The wives are not named in the Genesis account, so the total comes from counting the family members listed rather than from eight individually named characters. Noah’s sons are named in Genesis 5:32 and again in the Flood narrative.
This figure is separate from the animals aboard the Ark. The text does not give one simple total for every animal, because its instructions distinguish between clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and the broader phrase “every living thing.” The human survivor count is much more specific.
