How many people attended the first festival at Worthy Farm in 1970?

The story behind the answer

The first festival at Worthy Farm in 1970 was attended by 1,500 people.

Michael Eavis hosted the event on 19 September 1970 at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset. It was billed as the Pop, Blues & Folk Festival, rather than initially as the large contemporary festival now known simply as Glastonbury. Tickets cost £1, and Tyrannosaurus Rex—later known as T. Rex—filled in after advertised headline acts withdrew.

The number is easy to confuse with other early Glastonbury figures. Eavis had hoped for about 5,000 attendees, while the 1971 festival drew roughly 12,000. A much smaller, unofficial 1978 gathering attracted around 500 people. Thus, 1,500 refers specifically to the inaugural 1970 event at Worthy Farm, not the festival’s early estimates or later crowds.
