How many people are described as being saved in Noah’s Ark in the New Testament?

The story behind the answer

The New Testament says that eight people were saved in Noah’s Ark.

First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being saved through water. The eight are Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the three sons’ wives. This matches the family group described in Genesis as entering the Ark.

The number is sometimes misremembered as twelve because twelve is prominent in other biblical contexts, especially the tribes of Israel and Jesus’ apostles. It is also distinct from the number of animals aboard the Ark, which is described in several ways in Genesis and is not eight.

In the New Testament, Noah’s Flood is used as an example in a discussion of salvation, patience, and baptism. The passage assumes the familiar Genesis account while specifically counting the human survivors. “Eight” therefore answers the question about people, not animals or total living creatures.
