How many people are described as being saved in Noah’s Ark in 1 Peter?

The story behind the answer

First Peter describes eight people as being saved through Noah’s Ark.

First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being brought safely through the flood. The eight are Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the sons’ three wives. Genesis names the sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth, although it does not provide the names of the four wives.

The figure is sometimes confused with the number seven in parts of the Genesis animal instructions. Genesis 7:2 distinguishes between animals regarded as clean and those regarded as unclean, while the human survivors remain a group of eight. The two numbers answer different questions.

The New Testament reference uses the flood as an example in a theological argument about salvation and baptism. The number itself is also consistent with the family group described in Genesis. Thus, “eight people” is the specific human-survivor count associated with the ark tradition.
