According to Genesis 7:2, Noah took seven pairs of every kind of clean animal aboard the Ark.
The verse distinguishes clean animals from animals that were not clean. It instructs Noah to take seven pairs of the clean animals, male and female, but only one pair of animals that were not clean.
This detail is sometimes simplified in retellings into the phrase “two of every kind.” That wording reflects the general pairing of male and female animals, but it omits Genesis’s separate instruction about clean animals.
The distinction also prepares for the sacrifices Noah makes after leaving the Ark. Genesis 8:20 says he built an altar and offered burnt offerings from the clean animals and clean birds.
