How many original studio albums did The Doors release with Jim Morrison?

The story behind the answer

The Doors released six original studio albums with Jim Morrison as their lead singer. They were The Doors, Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun, The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel, and L.A. Woman.

The run began with The Doors in January 1967 and ended with L.A. Woman in April 1971. These albums trace the band’s development from psychedelic rock and extended improvisation toward increasingly blues-influenced material. L.A. Woman was the final Doors album released during Morrison’s lifetime and the last to feature him as a living performer.

The number can cause confusion because The Doors’ discography contains nine studio albums in total. After Morrison’s death in 1971, the remaining members recorded Other Voices and Full Circle without him. They later created An American Prayer by combining Morrison’s previously recorded poetry with new instrumental backing, but that 1978 release is generally treated separately from the six-album Morrison-era sequence.

Live albums, compilations, soundtracks, and archival releases are not included in this count.
