The four musicians had already crossed paths through Linda Ronstadt’s touring band. Frey and Henley had been recruited first, while Meisner and Leadon joined the developing lineup. Together, they moved from backing Ronstadt to launching their own group on David Geffen’s Asylum Records label.
The Eagles’ original lineup combined several musical backgrounds: Frey brought songwriting and rhythm-guitar skills, Henley played drums and sang, Meisner contributed bass and vocals, and Leadon supplied guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro, and country-rock expertise.
