Five official commercial singles were released from Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album.
The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” They appeared across the album’s promotional campaign from 1991 into 1993 and helped establish several songs as enduring Metallica standards.
“Don’t Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio promotionally, but it did not receive a commercial single release, so it is not counted among the five official singles.
The singles also had different chart stories. “Enter Sandman” reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Nothing Else Matters” became especially successful internationally. Counting promotional radio releases alongside commercial singles produces a different total, which is why the wording of the question matters.
