A standard darts board has 20 numbered scoring segments.
The segments are numbered from 1 to 20 and arranged around the board in a fixed order. Each wedge contains a single, double and treble scoring area, while the central bull sections use separate values.
The modern numbering sequence is designed to punish inaccuracy by placing high numbers beside low numbers. For example, the 20 segment sits next to 1 and 5. This arrangement means that a dart narrowly missing a target can lose many points, adding a strategic element to aiming.
The standard board also includes an outer double ring, an inner treble ring, the outer bull and the bullseye. The numbered wedges are not themselves the whole scoring layout: ring position determines whether the segment’s value is multiplied.
