Two newly promoted teams won their opening 2026–27 Premier League matches.
Hull City defeated Manchester United 2–0, while Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2–1. Both victories came on Saturday, 22 August 2026, giving two promoted clubs immediate wins on their return to the top flight.
Coventry City was the other promoted team involved in the opening round, but it lost 3–0 away to Arsenal. The three promoted clubs therefore finished the first round with two wins and one defeat between them.
This was reported as only the fourth time in Premier League history that two promoted clubs had won on the opening matchday. The achievement made the start especially memorable for Hull and Ipswich, even though the season was still in its earliest stage.
