Three newly promoted clubs played in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round.
The promoted clubs were Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. All three appeared in the first round, giving the 2026–27 opener a complete showcase of the season’s new arrivals. Coventry visited defending champions Arsenal, Hull hosted Manchester United, and Ipswich welcomed Sunderland.
Their results were mixed. Arsenal defeated Coventry 3–0, Hull beat Manchester United 2–0, and Ipswich defeated Sunderland 2–1. Together, the promoted clubs recorded two wins and one loss, scoring four goals and conceding three across their opening matches.
The clubs arrived through different promotion routes and had different lengths of absence from the top division. Coventry returned after 25 years away, Hull after nine years, and Ipswich after one year. That distinction is easy to miss when all three are simply described as “newly promoted,” but it provides useful context for understanding their opening-weekend story.
