How many metres tall is the Taipei 101 skyscraper?

The story behind the answer

Taiwan’s Taipei 101 skyscraper is 508 metres tall.

Located in Taipei’s Xinyi District, the tower was completed in 2004 and officially opened on December 31 that year. It was designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and developed by the Taipei Financial Center Corporation. Its name refers to the 101 floors above ground, a striking feature when the building opened.

Taipei 101 held the title of the world’s tallest building from 2004 until the Burj Khalifa opened in Dubai in 2010. The tower’s design combines modern engineering with architectural references to East Asian pagodas and bamboo. It also contains a huge tuned mass damper, a suspended steel sphere that helps reduce movement caused by wind and earthquakes. Visitors can see the damper inside the building.
