How many members are in U2’s classic lineup?

The story behind the answer

U2’s classic lineup has four members: Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.

The four musicians formed the group in Dublin in 1976 after responding to a school notice posted by drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Bono became the lead vocalist, The Edge played guitar and keyboards, Adam Clayton played bass, and Mullen played drums.

Unlike many long-running rock bands, U2 retained the same four-person core lineup throughout its major recording and touring career. The members also kept their familiar stage names: Bono is Paul Hewson, while The Edge is David Evans.

Other musicians have contributed to U2 recordings and performances, including keyboardist Terry Lawless and guitarists supporting live arrangements. They are collaborators rather than members of the classic four-person band, which is why U2 is conventionally described as a quartet.
