How many levels did Noah’s Ark have in the Genesis description?

The story behind the answer

The Genesis description gives Noah’s Ark three levels.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make the ark with lower, second, and third decks. These three levels are part of the construction instructions delivered before the Flood. The same verse mentions an opening near the top and a door in the side, although translations differ in how they describe some architectural details.

The decks help explain how the narrative imagines space for Noah’s family, animals, and stored food. Genesis does not provide a modern blueprint or specify exactly how each level was divided. Later artistic reconstructions therefore vary considerably in internal arrangement.

The three-level description is separate from the ark’s overall dimensions of 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits. Those measurements describe length, width, and height, while the decks describe the internal vertical arrangement. Popular images may show more floors or elaborate compartments, but those additions come from later interpretation rather than explicit Genesis wording.
