How many levels are in the original Crash Bandicoot?

The story behind the answer

The original Crash Bandicoot has 32 levels.

Released for the original PlayStation in 1996, the game follows Crash as he travels across the Wumpa Islands, defeats Doctor Neo Cortex’s forces, and attempts to rescue Tawna. Its 32-level structure includes jungle, river, industrial, and castle environments, along with boss encounters and bonus rounds.

The number can be confusing because the game also contains bonus rounds, secret content, and individual boss stages. Those additional activities do not change the standard level count cited for the main game. A hidden level, Stormy Ascent, was cut from the finished release but remained on the disc and was later restored for the N. Sane Trilogy.

The original game’s levels are generally linear, reflecting Naughty Dog’s effort to make a fully 3D platformer while keeping environments manageable on PlayStation hardware. That design helped define the series’ behind-the-character perspective and crate-breaking challenges.
