How many humans does Genesis describe as surviving the flood aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes eight humans as surviving the flood aboard Noah’s Ark.

The group consists of Noah, his wife, Noah’s three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the three sons’ wives. First Peter 3:20 also refers to eight people being saved through the flood, reinforcing the traditional count in the New Testament.

This number is easy to confuse with other figures in the account. Noah has three sons, not eight, and the ark carries many animals in addition to the humans. Genesis also gives Noah’s age as 600 when the floodwaters come, but that number is not a count of survivors.

The text does not provide the names of Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law. Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions give some of these women names, but those names are not supplied in Genesis itself. The canonical count remains eight people.
