How many human passengers did Genesis say were saved in the Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says eight people were saved in the Ark.

The eight are Noah, his wife, Noah’s three sons, and the three sons’ wives. Genesis 7:13 describes Noah entering with his wife, his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives. Together, that family group totals eight human passengers.

The number is also echoed in the New Testament. First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being brought safely through water. This later reference helped preserve the traditional count in Christian interpretation.

The figure is sometimes confused with the numbers of animals brought aboard, which vary by passage and translation. Genesis focuses on Noah’s household as the human survivors; it does not say that a larger community entered the Ark. The answer is therefore eight people, specifically Noah’s immediate family.
