How many golf balls did Alan Shepard hit on the Moon during Apollo 14?

The story behind the answer

Alan Shepard hit two golf balls on the Moon during Apollo 14.

Shepard, Apollo 14's commander, brought a modified golf club head that could be attached to the handle of a lunar sampling tool. Near the end of the mission's second Moon walk, he struck two golf balls as a light-hearted demonstration and later reported that one traveled far farther than the other because of his restricted swing.

The golf shots took place in the Fra Mauro highlands on 6 February 1971. Shepard and lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell were conducting geological work, so the stunt occupied only a small part of a much larger scientific expedition. Command module pilot Stuart Roosa orbited overhead in Kitty Hawk.

The event is often remembered as the first sport played on another world. Because the Moon has no atmosphere and only about one-sixth of Earth's gravity, a struck ball could potentially travel farther, although the astronaut's bulky suit limited the actual swing.
