How many floors or levels does Genesis describe inside Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having three levels.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make the Ark with lower, second, and third decks. The verse appears alongside instructions for a roof and a side entrance, giving the vessel a basic internal arrangement rather than presenting it as a featureless box.

The three-level design is distinct from the Ark’s external dimensions of 300 by 50 by 30 cubits. It also differs from later artistic reconstructions, which may add detailed rooms, stalls, corridors, or mechanical systems not specified in Genesis.

The number three is therefore a direct textual detail, while the exact layout and use of each deck remain unspecified. Popular images often show animals arranged across multiple floors, but the biblical account does not assign particular animals to particular levels.
