How many floors does Shanghai’s Jin Mao Tower contain?

The story behind the answer

Shanghai’s Jin Mao Tower contains 88 floors.

The tower was designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1999. Its form combines a modern steel-and-glass skyscraper with references to traditional Chinese pagodas. The repeated setbacks become smaller toward the top, creating a tiered silhouette.

Jin Mao Tower stands in the Lujiazui financial district of Pudong, across the Huangpu River from historic central Shanghai. Its uses include offices, an observation area and the Grand Hyatt Shanghai hotel, which occupies many of the upper levels.

The number 88 has cultural significance in Chinese culture because the number eight is associated with prosperity. The tower is sometimes confused with Shanghai Tower, which is taller and has 128 floors, or the nearby Shanghai World Financial Center, whose opening was earlier. Together, the three buildings form one of Shanghai’s most recognizable skyscraper clusters.
