How many entrances does the Harmandir Sahib traditionally have?

The story behind the answer

The Harmandir Sahib traditionally has four entrances. These entrances are positioned on the four sides of the complex and symbolize openness to people from every direction and background.

The shrine, widely known as the Golden Temple, stands in Amritsar within the Sarovar, or sacred pool, of the Harmandir Sahib complex. Its design expresses the Sikh ideal that the place of worship is open to all, regardless of caste, social status, gender, or religious origin.

The four entrances are symbolic rather than a statement that only four doors exist in every surrounding building. The wider complex includes gateways, causeways, courtyards, and other structures. Another common mix-up is the Akal Takht, which is also within the complex but is a separate institution associated with temporal and community authority.
