How many doors did Noah’s Ark have in the Genesis account?

The story behind the answer

In the Genesis account, Noah’s Ark had one door.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to place the Ark’s entrance in its side. The wording describes a single doorway rather than multiple entrances. This instruction appears with the Ark’s roof, decks, rooms, and dimensions, forming part of the vessel’s construction plan.

Later in the story, Genesis says that God shut Noah in after he entered the Ark. That statement reinforces the importance of the single entrance in the narrative, although it does not provide engineering details about hinges, locks, or the door’s exact size.

Modern illustrations sometimes show several openings or elaborate boarding systems, especially when artists try to depict animals entering efficiently. Those additions are not specified in Genesis. The canonical answer is one door, located in the side of the Ark.
