How many compute units did the original PlayStation 4 GPU contain?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation 4 GPU contained 18 compute units.

The PS4 used a custom AMD Radeon-based graphics processor with 18 compute units. Each compute unit contained 64 stream processors, giving the GPU 1,152 stream processors in total. The graphics processor operated at 800 MHz and delivered approximately 1.84 teraflops of theoretical single-precision performance.

This specification belongs to the original PlayStation 4 and the later Slim model, not the more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro. The Pro increased the graphics hardware to 36 compute units and raised the theoretical performance substantially.

Compute units are a technical description of the GPU’s parallel processing blocks. They should not be confused with CPU cores: the original PS4 had eight low-power AMD Jaguar CPU cores, while its compute units handled graphics workloads.
