Five commercially released singles promoted Metallica's 1991 album. They were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.”
The singles helped turn the album into a worldwide breakthrough. Each highlighted a different part of the record: the opening riff of “Enter Sandman,” the dramatic arrangement of “The Unforgiven,” the ballad-like “Nothing Else Matters,” and the heavier songs that followed.
“Don't Tread on Me” is the frequent source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio as a promotional release but did not receive a commercial single release. Counting it produces six radio-associated tracks, but the number of commercial singles remains five.
