Five commercial singles were released from Metallica's 1991 album, commonly known as The Black Album.
The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” They appeared over a period stretching from July 1991 to February 1993, giving the album an unusually long promotional life.
This sequence helped present different sides of the record. “Enter Sandman” offered a concise, riff-driven introduction; “The Unforgiven” emphasized a dramatic ballad structure; “Nothing Else Matters” showed the band's softer and orchestral side; and the remaining singles highlighted the album's heavy grooves and touring identity.
A frequent counting mistake comes from including “Don't Tread on Me.” That song was issued to rock radio promotionally, but it did not receive a commercial single release. Counting it produces six, while the official commercial-single total is five.
