Metallica released five commercial singles from The Black Album.
The singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they gave the album an unusually broad promotional campaign and helped several individual songs become staples of rock radio and live performances.
“Enter Sandman” served as the lead single and introduced the album’s streamlined, groove-heavy style. “Nothing Else Matters” demonstrated the band’s willingness to embrace a power-ballad format, while “Sad but True” emphasized the record’s slower, massive guitar sound.
A common counting mistake is to include “Don’t Tread on Me.” That song was issued to rock radio shortly after the album’s release, but it did not receive a commercial single release. The distinction explains why some informal lists mention six promotional songs while official accounts identify five commercial singles.
